Asakusa Sanja Matsuri Symbolic Festival
Sanja Matsuri, an annual festival taking place in Asakusa Prefecture during the last three days of May is held in honor of the three local men who established and founded the famous Sensoji Temple, whom considered as the Gods of Shinto in the Asakusa shrine.
The Sanja Matsuri is known as one of the “Three great Shinto festivals in Tokyo” – along with the Kanda and Sanno. The main characteristic of this festival is the parading of Mikoshi from various neighborhoods, musicians, and dancers wearing Edo costume, which are carried through the streets along Yagani Dori to Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Temple with the expectation of bringing good luck and prosperity or a bumper crop.
A large group of people is needed to carry the Mikoshi as it is very heavy. Each team in the same village usually has the same costumes. The size and weight of Mikoshi used for children are a lot small when they are also allowed to participate in the procession.
The event has featured excitingly as a vibrant atmosphere of hundreds of attendees with drumbeats and flutes.
