When I first came to Japan, in order to improve my Japanese language skills, I went to study at Kanda foreign language center for 3 weeks. That day, instead of going to school at the center like usual, I had a field trip. At 9:00 a.m. I made an appointment with the teacher at Kanda station. We took the train together to Ueno station. After walking for about 10 minutes, we arrived at the sightseeing spot, Yushima Tenjin Shrine.
Yushima Tenjin is a temple located in Bunkyo ward, Tokyo. Founded in 458, the school is located very close to Ueno Park and not far from the University of Tokyo.
Yushima Tenjin is a place where Michizane Sugawara, the famous god of learning, is worshiped. This temple is visited by many devotees during exam season to pray for passing the exam. It is famous not only for its academic benefits but also for various benefits such as finding a job, matchmaking, curing illness, etc.
This temple is associated with plum blossoms and is decorated with many plum blossom motifs. There is also a plum tree garden on campus. It is said that it blooms beautifully in spring.
It was a very interesting field trip. I learned more about Japanese culture. I will try to explore more places in Japan.
